IV: The siege of Malta: the knights of saint John?

The Knights of Saint John
continued to fight the Turks,
so finally in 1565 the Turks decided to try
& capture Malta!
They sent a fleet of 81 ships with more than 30.000 soldiers on board?
This Turkish armada arrived @ Malta
on 18 May 1565 & sailed into the Bay of Marsaxlokk:
their Islamic Soldiers disembarked & camped on the Plain of Marsa! In 1565 the Knights of Saint John
was a Frenchman called Jean Parisot de la Valette (1494-156
:
he then was 70 years old
but quite valiant!
Still the Maltese
could only muster a force of about 9000 men?
All of them fled to the shelter of walled cities,
Birgu (Vittoriosa), L'Isla (Senglea) & Mdina:
they took their domestic animals
with them!
Firstly the Turks decided to capture the Fort of Saint Elmo,
which stood alone on the Sceberas Penin-sula on the site of Valetta!
They bombarded the fort, which bravely resisted
until 23 June 1565.
Even though the Turks eventually captured the fort
which was a Pyrrhic Victory: they lost 8000 men, about a quarter of their whole army
in this siege; their commander, Dragut Rais,
was also among these dead!
Afterwards the Turks beheaded 4 Knights they had captured
& nailed them to crosses! Then they sent them floating across the harbor to Fort Saint Angelo!
Grand Master La Valette thèn beheaded their Turkish prisoners & fired their heads from their cannons!
The Turks then tried to capture Birgu (Vittoriosa) & L'Isla (Senglea)
but they failed & suffered
heavy losses!
A relief force
of 8000 Scilians arrived
in Northeast Malta on 7 September & shortly afterwards
the Turks abandoned their siege
& withdrew!
