During his college days there was a break of one year in 1943 when Stanley fell seriously I'll with an attack of typhoid, but he came back to the College for his final year '44-'45. That year he won several prizes and in April 1945 he gained is degree with the qualification: first class. As part of the requirement for his BD-degree, Samartha wrote a thesis entitled Clement of Alexandria - The Relevance of his Method for the Presentation of the Gospel in India. in this study, SJS already struggles to establish a sound relationship between the 'unique revelation' of G d in Jesus Christ with the religious heritage of India. He joins Clement of Alexandria both in his method of relating and adapting Christianity to the culture and philosophy of his time and in his conception of continuity: pre-Christian and non- Christian traditions have a pedagogic function in relation to Christ; these traditions are not totally antagonistic to the Gospel.
After his study, SJS went to Udipi as an assistant pastor, giving scripture-lessons in the BEM Christian high school, where the majority of the children consisted mainly of Hindus. His senior pastor was reverend Cornelius Lazarus, a former classmate of SJS's father in the seminary ...
Udipi is a famous Hindu pilgrimage centre of Krsna bhakti. In the centre of Udipi there are eight mathas or temples in the Vaisnavite tradition of Madhvacharya (1199-1279). Once Stanley was among the crowds of pilgrims together with Christian evangelists, preaching the gospel and distributing bible portions.
In Udipi, Samartha met his wife Edna Iris Furtado. She was born in Mangalore in 1924. As the daughter of Augustine and Janet Furtado. Stanley Samartha and Iris Furtado married in 1947. Three children were born: the daughters Usha ('dawn'
& Kamalini ('lotus' & a son Ravi ('sun' ...
Sue & me were hitch hiking around there in the springtime of '68 on our way from Madras & Kerala to Calcutta: another time/same place ...?!
