When we begin to look at narrative scènes of reading ~ both prescriptive & descriptive ~ in the bible, we will find the semantic analysis strengthened by the accounts of our informants, as it were. Some have argued that our "informants" are not clearly a random sample of this old culture, as they are all centered around the Deuteronomistic school with its very heavily didactic tendency. They question whether such selected documents as "J" & "E" would also share "D"'s concept of reading. Howver, since J & E do not seem to ever mention reading at all, it is hard to argue from silence. Moreover, I believe that there is other corroborating evidence for my (DB's) analysis of reading in the bible which is not from the Deuteronomists per se. See, for instance the description of a scene of reading in Nechemyah 8, although it could be argued that this late text reflects the devolutionary influence of Deuteronomy, & that argument would have some merit.

Aan 't begin v/d zevende maand, toen de Yisraelieten zich in hun steden hadden gevestigd, verzamelde 't voltallige volk zich op 't plein voor de Waterpoort. Men vroeg Ezra, de schrijver, om 't boek te halen met de wet van Mosheh, de weg die de Eeuwige aan Yisraeel had opgelegd ...

Ezra, de priester, haalde 't wetboek & toonde 't aan de aanwezige mannen & vrouwen, & aan ieder die in staat wat om 't te begrijpen.

DIT gebeurde op de eerste dag v/d zevende maand. Op 't plein voor de Waterpoort las Ezra de mannen & vrouwen & ieder die 't kon begrijpen hardop uit 't boek voor, vanaf 't moment dat 't licht werd tot in de middag & allen luisterden aandachtig naar 't boek van de wet ...

Kortom, overal waar mensen zijn ontstaan wetten: zonder wet is er geen menselijke gemeenschap of liefde mogelijk tot op de dag van vandaag.
