TOCH
had ik
veertig jaar geleden
Alleen ruimtevaart~ & wapenindustrie, wetenschappen & handel, kunst & cultuur
Their isolated residence in the desert {vooral ook tussen Yericho & "Sodom" & 'de hele Yardeenvallei'!} allowed the Qumran community to strictly adhere to "G d's commandment", that a chasm
be maintained between the two parties that make up humanity.
The desert community set itself apart from "the dwelling of the men of sin" {1QS 8.13},
and distanced itself from all of the sinful society of their day.
At the same time, the desert affords an effective means for the ascetic withdrawal of the community
from all worldly pleasures, from "the noise of the nations and the uproar of kingdoms {1QH 14.7}.
That said, it is clear that the move to the desert has a concrete social function as well.
After all, many popular movements in antiquity had their genesis in a departure for the desert {forests & mountains}. This move was motivated by the difficult social conditions, and often by pressures and persecutions that caused the group to seek safe haven in the desert. It appears that persecution
played a role in the Qumran community's move to the desert. These persecutions did not cease
even after the community had exiled itself, as "the Wicked Priest pursued the Teacher of Righteousness
to consume him with the heat of his anger in the place of his banishment" {1QpHab 9.4-6}.
Proof of this is found in the War Scroll (which in our reckoning was composed earlu on in the existence of the sect), which refers to the members of the community as "the exiled of the desert" {1QM 1.2}, that is,
as having been forced to go into exile in the desert. According to the War Scroll, the members of this community will do battle against the forces of the enemy
"when the exiled sons of light return from
the desert of the nations to camp
in the desert of Yerushalayim" {1QM 1.3}.
Here, then,
the departure for the desert
is seen as a means of concentrating the forces
needed for the 'revolutionary
miltary operation'.
Je ziet
dergelijke 'sociale bewegingen'
nog steeds overal plaatsvinden
in talloze landen &
woeste streken.
EN
in achterbuurten,
villawijken, migraties, kolonisaties,
expedities, hulporganisaties
& diverse acties.
Wat
dat betreft
is er echt
'niets nieuws meer' onder
de zon op dit ondermaanse:
de media staan er
nu elke dag
weer vol
mee.
Onderscheidingsvermogen blijft
'hoofdzaak': tussen go{e}d &
kwaad, ietwat beter
& slechter
...
