Time & Human Language Now/jbml 8/3 messianic state
Revelations/Starters 3)
Status of the messianic:
You and I have not resolved our communication on this big theme.
I continue to have the sense that you cut off the possibility of a more generous reading of this impulse
because of the destructive irrationalism with which it is almost exclusively associated in Israel, elsewhere in the Jewish world and in the Christian world today. (Indeed, one of the large themes that "time and language now" might encompass is the collapse of, and distinctions between, the affect of themes such as the messianic now and in the past.) You phrase the impulse only as a (wrongheaded) alternative
to facing the abyss. That may well be an appropriate characterization of some earlier messianisms, and it promises to give me
some grasp on how I relate, today, to Heschel's portrait of the Kotsker;
something I will have to do un the coming months.
OBVIOUSLY,
THIS IS A THEME THAT WAS VITALLY IMPORTANT FOR ME,
AS A YOUNGER PERSON, IN CONCEIVING A VITAL LINKAGE BETWEEN MY DESIRE
FOR TRANSGENERATIONAL JEWISH IDENTIFICATION AND MY DESIRE FOR HUMAN REDEMPTION.
I THINK IT WOULD BE USEFULL TO WORK TOGETHER AT TRYING TO ARTICULATE THE RELATIONS BETWEEN MESSIANISM
AS AN IMPULSE TO DO MOTE THAN JUST MUDDLE THROUGH AND MESSIANISM AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE ABYSS,
ESPECIALLY SINCE IT APPEARS MORE AND MORE THAT "MUDDLING THROUGH" ISN'T MUCH OF AN OPTION.
WE HAVE BEEN TOO SUCCESSFUL NOT TO SUFFER TERRIBLY
FROM OUR IMPERFECTIONS; "THE PLANET WILL
NOT FORGIVE US."
To Mor
it seems that
YESHUA's "stand" still
comes closest to the revelation of "the messianic",
even though it has also led to so many mis-conceptions in all kinds of orthodox, roman catholic,
Protestant & Sectarian extremist groups, as it did before and after their coming & going: somehow I sense in every myDi-entry
a longing for that open, intriguing, healing, critical, loving & tender attitude combining honesty,
intentionally taking risks while giving up an illusional self in order to be, hopefully,
better able to "listen to the 'heavenly Father/Mother in us";
is still is & remains a matter of creative association,
Socratic Honesty & Buddhist Perseverance
with messianic Jewish fervour?"
