grafheuvels, graf-giften, hunebedden, pyramides, ziggurats, bergen,
dalen, palen, bomen, planten,
sjamanen, tempels
etc.

Mensen
hebben blijkbaar behoefte
aan kapstokken, paraplustandaards, parasolletjes & serenades op hun
balkonnetjes? Gewoon 'n kwestie van woordkeus, begripsvorming,
verstandhouding & alles
wat menselijk is.

't Is
maar net wat je
er al of niet mee doet
& laat: water, voedsel, kleding
& 'n thuis voor alle kinderen: al met al
zitten we dus nog steeds met al die
onverteerde erfenissen
van de afgelopen
duizenden jaren

In
addition to
that "confidence", the
doctrine of double predestination
can engender among its adherents an ideology
of military activism (Inquisition/Cromwell's puritan
soldiers/mujaheddin/taliban/crusade armies!), for enemies of "G d's select"
were indeed created to be punished?! Moreover, the victory of the 'righteous' over the "Sons of Belial"
has been foreordained, and thus may be seen as a fait accompli. The War Scroll espouses
the doctrine of predestination and believed that the enemies' downfall at the hands of the sons
of light is a foregone conclusion, since "we, in the lot of your truth, rejoice in your mighty hand
........ whose mighty hand is with the poor ...... since ancient time you determined the day
of the great battle .... to humiliate darkness" {1QM13.12-16}! From these statements
it is clear that the dualism, double predestination, & apocalypticism of the Qumran
community could engender an activist ideology {as indeed happened in other
movements}, and, as the War Scroll clearly demonstrates, this activism
took on a military form. Of course, this ideology is not limited
to a single book. After all. the War Scroll was accepted
within Qumran, so the hopes of its author were
shared by the community, at least
for a time.

As we
already saw
several times before,
even after the sect underwent
significant spiritual
transformations,
the Qumran community
did not completely relinguish
their activist stance, but rather post-
poned the earthly revolution to the distant
future time. Flavius Josephus famously describes
the Essens as pacifists, but he also tells of John {Yochanan}
the Essene, who fought valiantly
against the Romans
[BJ2.567;3.11,19]!

It stands
to reason that
the Essens ~ or at least some of them ~ were swept up
in the national uprising
against the crual
Romans?!

Those
who participated
in the war probably felt
that the predestined day of
judgment had
arrived.

For
the 'survivors',
apparently, the War
Scroll came to be understood
as referring to, indeed,
a more distant
future
