(& observed by Orthodox Jews as days of spiritual semi-mourning): ORIGINALLY IT WAS
ALSO A HARVEST FESTIVAL OF WHEAT (cf. Passover/Pesach/Pasen).
Later it developed into a Festival òf Law with many historical associations
going back to the events at Mount SINAÏ & the GIVING OF THE TEN
COMMANDMENTS. Ceremonial OBSERVANCE? It lasts for 1 day (orthodox, 2 days).
CANDLES AND KIDDUSH IN THE HOME; from unnecessary work; services in the synagogue;
nb. THE SYNAGOGUES ARE DECORATED WITH FLOWERS AND PLANTS {to recall the Harvest Origin), & the TEN COMMANDMENTS are also recited from the Scroll during the morning Service
[to emphasize the modern significance of the moral law) while many Liberal congregations
associate their “Annual CONFIRMATION SERVICE” (“belijdenis/deelnemer”) with
this Festival, for as the Israelites became mature & more responsible as a nation
when they accepted the moral law, so are mature individuals expected
to accept moral laws. MODERN SIGNIFICANCE? This Festival thus
the essential part which the moral law must play in the life
of nations & of individuals! Its connection with PASSOVER
{by counting the days of the Omer) indicates
that Freedom & the moral law
are interdependent.
