THE
Bible: "reading"
as a speech-act. A
semantic analysis of the distribution
of the root 'qr' in biblical Hebrew reveals the following points.
The root
encompasses a range of meanings including "to call," "to proclaim," "to summon or invite," & "to read."
It will be immediately observed that the whole semantic field to which these glosses belong
is that of speech acts &
not of passive
reception.
And indeed, as we shall argue,
"reading" in biblical Hebrew is a speech act. It nearly always means "to read aloud to someone,"
as confirmed by the complements "in the ears of ..." or "before ...."
In all these cases the activity described is the reading of some kind of message & its communicate
or proclamation to an audience.
The following verses will point up the force of 'qr' in the bible:
"and the Lord CALLED OUT to the Adam & said to him 'Where are you?'
"And the angel of the Lord CALLED OUT to him from the heaven & said,
'Avraham, Avraham!' And he said, 'Here I am!' (Gen. 22:11) wayikra eelaw malach Yahweh min-hashamayim
wayomer avraham avraham wa-yomer hineeni.
"And now, CALL OUT in the ears of the Peopld, and say, 'Whoever is afraid & terrified, let him sit & watch from the Mountain of Gilead!'"
(Judges 7:3) wa'atah kra na beaznei ha'am leemor mi-yaree wechareed yashov weyitspor meehar hagilad wayashav.
"And he took the Book of the Covenant, & he READ it in the ears of the People, & they said, "All that the Lord has spoken,
we will do & we will obey!' And Moshe
took the blood & sprinkled it on the People & said, 'This is the blood of the Covenant,
which G d has enacted with you with regard to all of these words!'" (Exodus 24:7)
