About The Life & Writings of Frederic Prokosch by Robert M. Greenfield ~ leest als 'n trein! First read The Asiatics in the middle of the 19
60's/sixties while hitch hiking & walking in-between the Low Lands & China ~ On the Road ~ as a hobbit through Eastern Turkey/Iran & Afghanistan/Pakistan with Sue Jensen from Fresno California (North Adoline 1612?) Finally reading his biography now by RMG! There is, Walt Whitman declared, an "inexplicable element of every highest poetical nature which causes it to cover up & involve it's real purpose & meanings in folded removes & far recesses." Frederic spent much of his life spinning fictions, playing different parts: surrounding himself with a veil of mystification ~ like many . whose paths he crossed . he lived most of his life behind a series of masks: "Ambiguity pleases me!" . "To say that everything is ambiguous is an appreciable element of truth!" . "I have spent my life alone, utterly alone, & no biogra-phy of me could ever more than scratch the surface. All the facts in
Who's Who, or whatever, are so utterly meaningless. My real life (if I ever dared to write it!) has transpired in darkness, secrecy, fleeting contacts & incommunicable delights, any number of strange picaresque escapades & even crimes, & I don't think that any of my 'friends' have even the faintest motion of what I'm really like or do have any idea of what my life has really consisted of ... With all the surface 'respectability,' diplomatic & scholarly & illustrious social con-tacts, my real life has been subversive, anarchic, vicious, lonely, & capricious!" Here, as in other "confessional" accounts in which he os-tensibly dropped hints about his secret life, Frederic sought to be ingeniously unhelpful, to titillate & say just enough to illuminate the surrounding darkness. Throughout his life he exhibited a love of sleight of hand & disguises. Absolutely one of my (many) favorites as far as books, stories, travels, mystic writings @ strange places & circumstances are concerned! It has, to me, a taste of Qumran, Petra, Av-dat, Sinai, Ararat, Qazvin, Herat, Kandahar, Kabul, Lahore, Srinagar, Agra, Madras, Kerala, Calcutta, Varanasi, Yamagishikai & Toyosato ...
Like alcohol, bravery, coöperatieven & de
'ermelose' dreven @ vale ouwe, is ook elke andere plek, tijd, plaats & 'toestand' helemaal deel geworden van dat 'geheel': onontwarbaar,
veelkleurig, intrigerend, delibererend, uitproberend, ontzaglijk boeiend & bron van alles wat ik veronderstel te zijn of ooit te 'worden' in elk woord, iedere 'daad', alle 'oogopslagen'

& doodgewone huistuinkeukenmanaangelegenheden dag in dag uit ~ I love IT!!!
