28092/10 Pentecost Shavuot 6th Sivan May/June 1967

IT
OCCURS SEVEN
WEEKS AFTER PASSOVER,
WITH THE INTERVENING DAYS
BEING KNOWN AS "the Days of counting the Omer"
& observed by Orthodox Jews as days of semi mourning?!
Originally it was a Harvest Festival of Wheat (cf. Passover)!? Later it developed

into a Festival of Law with historical associations going back to the events @ Mount SINAI
and the giving of the 10 Commandments! This ceremonial observance lasts for 1 day (Orthodox 2 days)!
Candles & KIDDUSH in the home; abstain from unnecessary work; services in the Synagogue (Beth Knesseth)!
N.B. the Synagogues are decorated with flowers and plants (to recall the harvest origin), & the Ten words/commandments
are recited from the Scroll during the morning service (to emphasize the modern significance of the Mòral Law)! Many liberal congregations associate their annual Confirmation Service with this Festival, for as the Israelites became more mature
& responsible as a nation when they accepted the moral law, só are mature individuals expected
to accept the moral law! Our modern significances now: THE FESTIVAL EMPHASIZES
THE ESSENTIAL PART WHICH MORAL LAW MÙST PLAY
IN THE LIFE OF NATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS!!
In connection with PASSOVER (by
counting the days of the Omer)
indicates that FREEDOM
and the Mòral law are
interdependent.
