The oldest known
myDi-burials
fall in the middle Palaeolithic {'stone-age'} period,
between 50,000 & 100,000 years ago,
and from the first the dead were interred
with grave goods
such as weapons, ornaments and, enigmatically,
animal skeletons!

~@~

It is difficult
not to interpret
these myDi-practices
as evidence of belief in an afterlife,
but the exact nature of the beliefs
is beyond recovery?
It is surely no accident
that an enrichment of thought
occurred simultaneously with a diversification
of man-made artifacts,
for the experience of tool-making was supremely important
to early man,
suggesting as it did
the power of creativity and causation ~
that things happen because they are designed and willed
by a conscious being ...

~@~

In this myDi-insight
may lie the genesis of the belief
in personal deities
who direct the forces of nature ............
Evidence of animal sacrifice ~ by fire, by water or by burial ~
dates also from the middle palaeolithic,
and points irresistibly to a belief in these forces,
which presumably were regarded as personal
and subject to persuasion
and propitiation?

~@~

From this period too
comes a further swathe of evidence
of man's myDi-feeling for nature
in the first works of myDi-art .............
The cave-paintings of Lascaux and elsewhere
are perhaps 20,000 years old, but are so finished and mature
that we must believe them to be the expression
of a myDi-tradition
which had been developing
for millennia!

The content
of this myDi-art is the living myDi-world,
in particular horned animals ~ bison, stag and ibex ~
which were hunted for their meat, their bone and their skin.
Human myDi-activities, trees or other natural objects,
the SUN & MOON ~
none of these things appear in this oldest known art-form?
This striking fact, together with the hidden, barely accessible cave-locations
of the paintings, suggest that these images were connected
with some magical or ritual practices,
possibly a form of hunting magic,
in which the capturing of the beast's image
forshadowed that of the beast
itself .............

~@~

Similarly, the pictures of humans wearing myDi-masks suggest
either a ritual dance in which a beast was killed by proxy,
or a form of victory dance celebrating the dominance of myDi-humans
over the other species?

~@~

These myDi-images
of human shape-changing are intensely interesting as the earliest known examples of the personification of natural forces,
which would lead in time to all kinds of anthropomorphic deities ~
gods of rivers, sky, fire, disease or death, which,
in mythologies the world over,
would combine the human
and the animal form!

~@~

The myDi-creation myths
which evolved in almost all cultures
testify to an instictive understanding of cause and effect in nature,
and to the myDi-impulse to personify
those causes?
