Although this interpretation of Edmond Jabès
seems minimally consistent and may even satisfy Walter Benjamin,
It does not take into account the quotation's direct address to us in the second person,
and the expectation that we will reply by addressing the speaker equally directly!

Even the post-Enlightenment thinkers among us who insist that the basic condition of being for the dead is complete absence of con-sciousness, corporeal coherence, and activity, must admit that we become the second person & listen to the dead, when we accept some of the messages they recorded when they we're still alive?

Modern conceptions of time further permit us to speculate that, just as letters and Internet Messages are received through a forward shift in time and space, perhaps some process enables messages to be transmitted backward in time, so that in the past my father "heard" the message created by my thinking of him now (in what was then the future)!?

zo'n vier maanden lang geweten dat ik 'op komst was' en ik moet
indrukken hebben opgedaan sinds zondag/moederdag 13 mei '45:
naarmate ik ouder aan 't worden ben
kijk ik verder terug
& vooruit?
