XQdb wants to make some sense of his other love

AND SHOW HOW IT DRIVES THE BORDER LINES, THE PARTITION OF JUDAEO-CHRISTIANITY, THAT FOLLOW! Danny Boyarin: Perhaps, better than "greater" or "lesser" in characterizing these investments, we should distinguish between a love of who I am, diasporic rabbinic Jew, & a desire for a different other, the subject of Christianity. Many years have gone into the making of this book ('BL/DB'knipoog, more, indeed, than any other of his books, & during those years the work has been presented in many venues? On one occasion, when he had delivered a lecture based on some of that work on the gospel of 'Yochanan', a very upset undergraduate arose from the audience to in-quire: WHO ARE YOU & why are you trying to take our gospel away from us? On another occasion, a group of Christian ministers asked me why he was nòt a Jew for "Yeshua", not in an effort to convert me to that movement but rather to understand what it ìs that makes him nòt one! At still another time, in YERUSHALAYIM on one memorable occasion, I was asked to reflect on the implications of this work for the present & the (possible) future? On all of those occasions, I disengaged from the question that was being asked, falling on a last resort of a scholarly scoundrel:
"I'M JÙST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT RÉALLY HÀPPENED!"

[Thàt was also a question Mòr asked that Wednesday, May 3rd '67, crossing through Mandelbaum Gate to 'the Other Side' on my way to the Old City, Qumran & Petra after Katamon, the Eilat Red & the Sdom Dead Sea, Sdeh Boqer/Avdat/Yodfat & Be'er Sheva!] In a more ongoing sense, he has, Danny writes, experienced the work on this book as a pleasing withdrawal from cultural wars in which he had been engaged for so long, for once nòt seeking (so he thought) to defend or attack, apologize or polemicize, but simply to describe & analyze! This book would not get done: it wouldn't let him finish? In particular, certain parts of the writing felt, even more than usual, peculiarly ùnsatisfying, feeble & flabby in their rhetoric, even, oddly, when he was more or less pleased with what he had to say! The penny dropped when CK observed that this was the first of his books that did nòt begìn with a personal letter, as it were, to the readers & the first, as well, in which he, at least oc-casionally, lapsed into a first-person plural subject, and not quite an authorial "WE" but still a voice that was seeking to distance himself from what he was saying. Overnight it became clearer to him that he could not evade the good & hard questions asked before?! This is thus, once again, an attempt to justify my love, explain it, ask that it be understood by others: to make it just to Jews & Christians ànd their discourses that are its subjects! We'll see? For me this started in the '50's@Irminloo & developed from there on 'gradually' till now.
