NOW JB IS THINKING
OF THE BEGINNING OF A BOOK,
IN THE FORM OF A RECORD OF CORRESPONDENCE

AND THUS HE BEARS IN MIND, AS ADDRESSEE, NOT M, BUT YOU. HE MEANS FOR YOU
NOT ONLY TO LISTEN IN ON (OR "READ INTO"knipoog THE CORRESPONDENCE, BUT ALSO TO ...
HE WANTS TO WRITE, "UNDERSTAND," BUT HE IS NOT SURE WHAT THAT MEANS AND EVEN WORSE,
HE FEARS IT WILL SOUND IMPERIOUS.

THAT IS YERUSHALAYIM HALF A YEAR BEFORE PETRA
HASELA HA'ADOM SUNDAY-EVENING ON JUNE FOURTH SINGING HATIQWA
walking from Wadi Musa through the Siq & getting up early next morning to take his H2Obath
naked under the waterfall in the small wadi basin alone just before the bedouins came
to pick him up for transportation

In what follows,
think (if you will, Jonathan writes)
of yourself as "Jonathan" when reading M's text,
and as 'M' when reading J's! And we thus will try to think of you,
as well as of each other, when we write. [Somewhere in January Danny,
Shula, Jeanny & I took the bus through the middle of the Negev via Avdat
& only a few days later I arrived from Elat in Be'er Sheva as in '65/'66 @ Vledder/Assen
& in the first week of June '67 @ Rabbat Ammon and so on we've talked about this several times
before so I'll leave it for what it is to dig into this new que éste?]!

Some (very!) obscure references may still find their way into our text?
JB & ML are a couple of old college friends carrying on their conversation that began
(also!) in a coffee shop over thirty years ago, and we have more than once complained and delighted
in the impression that no one else would likely understand what we say that no one else would likely understand what we say to each other.

Such idiosyncrasy is not our goal. Still, it is nice to be able
to throw some Yiddish into an e-mail letter,
so I wrote:
