1) Films of Ralph Bakshi: I think a key cultural motif for both of us is the scene in Wizards where the bad brother's two goons come for a couple of rabbis in long white caftans. They say, "Okay, but just give us a couple of minutes," at which point they start into this com-pletely un dignified vaudeville act in which they're trying to get God's attention. There's a bit of Yiddish thrown into it, notably the phrase
DI GANTSE VELT (the whole world)! THE HIT EACH OTHER, THEY CLIMB UP AND DOWN LADDERS, AND EVENTUALLY ONE OF THE GOONS SAYS, "Time's up" and shoots both of them.
WHY DOES IT MOVE US SO?
Why is it all the more forceful because the word "Jew" is never mentioned?
What is the relation of this scene tot the one near the end of the movie, where the "good" wizard, just before offing his Hitler brother with a pistol, says "I'm glad you changed your last name, you son of a bitch!"
How do we untangle the anti-Nazi message of that film from its Heideggarian anti-technological neo-Romanticism? Why would it even be a useful critical exercise to do so, rather than an amusing academic parlor game?
