The Way Love Is

"Meant
only for
You
but open to
Everybody Else
also"

In
the calling
out to one
another of the
lovers up and down the strand
In the sounds of the waves and
the cries of the seagulls circling the sand
In the fragments of the songs carried down the wind from some prayers
In the murmuring of the city
in the distance ominous
and low

{from Zipporim, Tiberius & Caesaria to Pan & Herodion, Qumran & Sdom}

I hear the sound of the world where we played and the far too simple beauty of the promises we made ...

If you ever need holding: Call my name, I'll be there!
If you ever need holding and no holding back, I'll see you thru
Sky blue and white

Where the touch of the lover ends and the souls of the friend begins
There's a need to be separate and a need to be one
And a struggle neither wins ...
Where you gave me the world I was in and a place I could make a stand
I could never see how you doubted me when I'd let go of your hand

{from Mount Hermon to Nebo, from Massada to Macherus & back again}

Yeah, and I was much younger then and I must have thought that I would
Know if things were going to end ...

And the heavens were rolling like a wheel on a track and our sky was
Unfolding and it'll never fold back
Shi: blue and white

{from KfarNachum, Chorazin, BethSaida, Migdal, Salim, BethAnie > Jericho}

And I'd have fought the world for you if I thought that you wanted me to
Or put aside what was true or untrue if I'd known that's what you needed
What you needed me to do ...

{from Kana, Nain, Sichar, Efraim, Beth Lechem, Yerushalajim, Emmaus ...}

But the moment has passed by me now to have put away my pride
And just come thru for you somehow ...

If you ever need holding: Call my name, I'll be there
If you ever need holding and no holding back, I'll see you thru ...

You're the color of the sky reflected
In each window pane ...
You're the whispering and the singing of my tires in the rain ...
You're the hidden cost and the things that's lost in everything I do!
Yeah and I'll never stop looking for you in the sunlight
and the shadows
And the faces on the avenue .......

That's the way love is
That's the way love is
That's the way love is

(Lives in The Balance)

Summertime '69 Ein Geddi
on the shores of the Dead Sea (alone) ...

Just remembered again after so many years ....

I used to be completely lost
in all those far away
days of the sixties .......

Kriegsdienstverweigerung
(Uri Davis in Israel one of the first) ...

Kamp Erika bij Ommen ('42) Krishnamurti
(Sterkampen in the twenties!)!
Kamp Vledder '65/'66 Heidemaatschappij
Diever Assen HvB S5 ............

Amsterdam Groot Mokum with hippies & provo:
Nieuwe Keizersgracht ...
Amstelhof woonboten Jordaan
classical music (about 30 records) ...

Before my memory starts fading out completely
I'd better write it down on those imaginary
internetpages that will exist
after I'm gone?

Southern Desert Negev Avdat Sdeh Boqer
with David Ben Gurion and his Paula
Anyways: alone in Ein Geddi after saying good bye
to Charmian May in Ruchama on the skirts
of the Negev Desert & Gaza

The month of May in the Summer of 1969
on the shores of the Dead Sea and on the borders of life ..

At that time I was in Kibbutz Har El
not so far from Ramallah?
Went to visit Ein Geddi again and again
with some rice, beans & fish.

Made a little fire on the shore with lots of dead wood
on the rocks.
Swimming is practically impossible.
That water is so salty that you can float upon it
without moving at all.
Just lay on your back and relax .......

On the opposite shore the mountains of Moab,
Rabbat Ammon, Urdun ...
Where I was arrested the day before the Six Day War started.
Brought up by Bedu to the police station of Elja
just outside Wadi Musa.

Aharon, Moses his brother is supposed to be buried there ...
And the Water still Flows Constantly
out of the Rock where
Mosje struck!

Petra oftewel HaSela HaAdom.
The Red Rocks of Gerti Bierenbroodspot.
Greek Roman Nabatean city cut out in live rock of all colours ...
Temples, graves, amphitheatre, pillars,
caves (Indiana Jones) with Grails.
The Wall Street of 2000 years ago.

The years also of Qumran with their Scrolls about
the Teacher of Righteousness & the Liar!
The Sons of Light. Essenen. Chassidiem.
Preparing for the Final Struggle.
Against the Evil Empire of Greek Roman Domination.

Associations are absolutely endless
and totally mixed up in my mind.

Anyway: there used to be a kind of youth hostel there,
wooden barracks surrounded by long soft wet green grass
under huge date palmtrees.

I always used to sleep outside when I could.
Rucksack, sleeping bag, old faded clothes, sandals
& a few books (Heinlein's Stranger
in a Strange Land,
Kahlil Gibran's Prophet,
Ecotopia,
The Asiatics of Frederic Prokosch:
Imaginary Journey of a young boy hitch hiking from
Lebanon's Ba'albek thru Persia
to jungles of Angkor Vat ...).

Susan & Hazel from the States were there with
records & a portable player:
Richie Havens, Bob Dylon, Jony Mitchell,
Donavan, Leonard Cohen ...
The years of the Black Panthers, the Weathermen,
Symbiotic Robbers & Crazy Charly Manson ...
JFK, Martin Luther King, moonlanding,
Cuba Crisis, Vietnam, Hanoi.

Napalm on Schools. Laos. Kampuchea. Jungles sprayed
with Agent Orange ...

I went back to Har El and my little bungalow
with shower and the turkeys.
Later Hazel come to visit me there in one big bed
with music & tears of laughter ..

She lived in Jerusalem's Katamon Tet and was working with
deaf children ...

There were so many people with different nationalities
and languages from all over the world,
even more after the war ...

Kibbutz Beit Alfa with mosaics & learning
hebrew language and Mosje from Calcutta, very black & skinny ...

Remembering them all, one by one and at the same time!
People of all ages and places living in mud huts
and modern villas.

Danny Boyarin, Moshav Shitufi Yod Fat where
once upon a time
Flavius Josephus was the Commander that Hid
in the Caves.

The stories of Yeshu Ben Sira and Dead Sea scrolls.
From Dan to Be'er Sheva.
From Eilat to the Hermon.
From Haifa to Agabah and from totally flat salt deserts
to Wadi Rum near Saoudi Arabia ..

All kind of hills and mountains while walking around lost
and without water or food.

Dreams and visions of people long dead but still living somehow.

Days of old with hot sunshine & snow flakes & ice.
Thirsty and hungry for righteousness.

Always received with open arms by people
between Acropolis and Kerala.
Calcutta & Kashmir. Madras & Lahore.
Kabul & Quetta.

Clay cities brown and grey with dust of ages.
Long clothes and dresses and smiling boys and girls of all ages.
Delicious food, icecold water from the well.
Homebaked flatbread.

Herbs & Spices.
Hashcakes and bhang, hishi sharp and beedies small.
The Jains of Old & New Delhi: Dinesh, Mokesh, Sushma & Ajay.
Nurit, Anat, Ayal, Ronit & Yossi, Shoshanna & Aharon.
Suleiman & Habibi, Yusuf & Uncle Moustache.

Arak & Raki. Local Liquor. Colors in countless varieties.
Smells and sounds of camels, donkeys and horses.

Mount Sinai and Mount Nebo. Hermon & Ararat.
Farideh Ghyacer of Qazvin.
Susan Jensen of Fresno.

I will never forget any of you.
Of most I even don't remember names or faces,
but all of you were so
fantastically friendly and hospitable and kind ..

You gave me, a total stranger from a far away strange land,
to drink and to eat
and a place to lay down to rest and sleep.
Company even though we didn't have a common language.

Stories told and repeated thru the ages.
Bibles & other holy books and rituals.
Children with G*D in their eyes.
Grandparents sad & lonely.

All ages, times and places flowing into one rainbow journey
that never ends and starts all over again
in dreams and memories.

That's where all of us meet in eternity.
Visions of old and new.
Without ending or beginning: just ONE ...

I may be crazy but I don't lie!

See You Soon?
