that's the way {I like it}
IN THE
Damascus Document
many scholars read an account of the origins
and structure of the community @ Qumran, but this is improbable,
since it is clear that the "Damascus" sect had many settlements, not just one,
and its organization differs from that of the community described in the Community Rule
[the "Union", or Hebrew 'yachad'}]
which is the more likely
to have lived
at Qumran.
A further
crucial difference
is that while the "Damascus" communities
had clearly broken off most of their contact with the Yerushalayim Temple,
believing its priests to be in error, it held
the Temple itself in high regard
& maintained some degree of
participation in
the cult.
The "Union"
had abandoned all connections with the Temple
and saw its own organization and practices as fulfilling
many of the Temple's cultic functions. However,
there is obviously a relationship between
those two sects.
Whether
the Damascus sect
was a parent movement to the "Union"
or an extension of it still remains disputed.
The claim in the Damascus Document that the sect
had already existed for a long time
is hard to evaluate.
On the one hand
it is likely that its legal traditions
even its calendar, go back a very long time.
On the other hand, its transformation into a sect
presupposes a radical break with other forms of Judaism
which probably took place in the 2nd or early 1st century BCE,
when their practices were banned under one or other king
of the native Hasmonnaean dynasty
that ruled from Yerushalayim
between 160s &
60s BCE.
This
"Damascus Document"
is [also] full of biblical language and allusions,
and part of its purpose seems to be to present
the sect as the true heir of the biblical Israel
and to demonstrate that its
fortunes are anticipated
in scriptural
texts.
levens & beter verstandhouding
onder elkander
onthouden
...
Dat
was in
feite de basis
van de [nog steeds
'komende'] verwerkelijking
van zijn Grote
Idee
