of the 'Old Testament'~@~

Palestine~Syria,
the so-called Old Testament
land of Canaan,
stood midway between
two great centres of civilization,
the NILE
and the TIGRIS~EUPHRATES.
The people
of this harsh land
depended for subsistence
on the rain~fall.
Settlements naturally clustered
around the fertile plains of the north,
along the sea coast and in the rich
but scattered oases
of the south.

The 'original'
inhabitants of the land
are not {yet?} known;
Canaanite tribes are the first recorded inhabitants
but the Biblical term 'Canaan' only dates back to about 1,500BC,
some 2,000 years after the Semitic penetration of the country.
The name, which originally referred only
to the Phoenician coastal strip,
was later applied to all of
Palestine-Syria.

IT seems likely
that the first Semitic settlers were Bedouin nomads
who had migrated from the Arabian Desert.
OTHER Semitic tribes,
akin to the Hebrews, established petty kingdoms
to the south and the east
of the Dead Sea and the Jordan River.
These tribes included a.o. the Midianites,
the Edomites, the Sodomites,
the Moabites and the
Ammonites.
At various times
all of these
were enemies
or allies
of the Israelites.

Nomadic
shepherds and goatherds
{Pims/Volkerts/Theos/Mohammads a.s.o.}
wandering from pasture to pasture,
the Canaanites~Semites had by the early Bronze Age {3000BC-2000BC}
begun to settle in walled towns and were slowly becoming
an agricultural people with secondary interests
in commerce.

aardappels poten met Dinah & Martijn, cocacola, kippen & katten, zweet en verhalen, zeepsop & compost, ladders & kruiwagens ...
Nog even uitrusten, warm bad, eten & kiloweegschaal {83?}
& dromenland!
