Placing Reading Continued: Ancient Medieval Modern
Going Back To My Roots (Danny Boyarin/Richie Havens a.o.)/(Heavenly myDi-intercourse a.s.o. March 2/2011) If we do pay closer attention to some of these statements, we will see that they conjure up several features of our reading practice(s): they assume that reading is a voluntary act; people can choose to do it or not. (Like going to Al-Quds & HaSela HaAdom and so on!) Accordingly, it must cause some kind(s) of pleasure to a reader (time-traveller) or (s)he will abandon the activity!? Second, the pleasure is produced by an affective identification between the reader(s) & characters in the story, a sympathy between the real reader (traveler) & imaginary people (situations) & their 'imaginary' adventures (constructs)?!
Third, at least ideally, the pleasures of these identifications are produced when readers are in private & can 'forget' THE reality in the illusion of a so called 'reality' of the characters & 'their stories'? DB: "Reading" as spoken of & described in the Bible had none of these features (in the begin-ning)! The Torah names the function of its reading as a SPEECH ACT! It declares of itself that its intention is, "it shall be with him (her), & (s)he shall read it EVERY DAY OF its (his/her) LIFE IN ORDER THAT SHE WILL LEARN TO FEAR (LOVE) THE LORD/LADY ITS G D, TO KEEP THE WORDS OF THIS TORAH AND TO PERFORM THE COMMANDMENTS" (Deut. 17:19) WEHAYTAH IMO WEKARA VO KAL-YEMEI CHAYAW LEMA'AN YILMAD LEYIRAH ET-YAHWEH ELOHAW LISHMOR ET-KAL-DIVREI HATORAH HAZOT WE'ET-HACHUKIM HAEELEH LAASOTAM
:IT IS TO BE WITH HER/HIM AND SHE IS TO READ IT ALL THE DAYS OF ITS LIFE SO THAT SHE MAY LEARN TO REVERE 'LADYLORD' G D AND FOLLOW CAREFULLY ALL THE WORDS OF THIS LAW AND THESE DECREES AND NOT CONSIDER THEMSELVES BETTER THAN ITS BROTHERS AND SISTERS TO THE RIGHT OR TO THE LEFT. LEVILTI ROEM LEVAVO MEE'ECHAW OELVILTI SOER MIN-HAMITSWAH YAMIN OESMOL LEMA'AN YA'ARICH YAMIM AL-MAMLACHTO HOE OEVANAW BEKEREV YISRAEEL! SO THEY & THEIR DESCENDENTS WILL REIGN A LONG TIME OVER HIS KINGDOM IN ISRAEEL!
