Placing Reading: Ancient, Medieval & Modern Times.

Hoe
dan ook
is het nog
steeds een kwestie van
groeiend inzicht, lichaams- & gebarentaal,
in totaal andere omgevingen & afwijkende geestestoestanden & 't ons 'thuisvoelen'! Danny Boyarin over 'reading', 'intention/attention', 'bijbelboeken' & onze eigen 'modern times' @ Israël, Europa & America. Ik citeer PR11:
THUS
reading was
not just a voluntary act
(in our religious past & sometimes even present 'for some of us'knipoog,
nor one that is supposed to produce pleasure? It was not an ex-citation of the emotions or sentiments,
but simply a (religious) demand that the reader fulfill the obligations that the read 'documents' contain!
THIS IS NOT A CLAIM OF LACK OF LITERARY VALUE AND BEAUTY IN THE BIBLICAL TEXT: TO OUR MODERN EARS AND EYES, THAT POETRY OF {F.I.} YIRMEYAHU (JEREMIAH) IS FULL OF SUCH (very) POETIC VALUE;
nevertheless, it can hardly be said to have attempted to persuade or seduce it's hearers with it's poetry?!
There is nothing dulce in the utile of Yirmeyahu. It should be made absolutely clear that I (DB) am not invoking a positivistic content-form distinction; indeed, I am asserting that the very notion of form is a historicizable practice & not a given of language.
(...)
IT IS CERTAINLY SIGNIFICANT THAT IN ENGLISH THERE IS A SYNCHRONIC SEMANTIC OPPOSITION BE-TWEEN "reading" & "lection" ~ THE READING OF THE BIBLE IN CHURCH OR SYNAGOGUE ~, WHILE IN BIBLICAL USAGE, OF COURSE, NO SUCH OPPOSITION EXISTS. READING IN THAT CULTURE IS A PUBLIC, ORAL, AND ILLOCUTIONARY SPEECH-ACT, AN ACT, MOREOVER, WHICH WHEN SUCCESSFUL, ALWAYS HAS PERLOCUTIONARY EFFECT!

And THIS is the ONLY type of reading of which the Bible knows!
THERE SIMPLY IS NO OTHER WORD IN BIBLICAL HEBREW WHICH CONVEYS THE SENSE OF PROCESSING AND RECEIVING WRITTEN LANGUAGE, AND THERE ARE NO SCENES DESCRIBED IN THE TEXT WHICH INDICATE PRIVATE READING!

The (above) scene of reading is doubled in the famous incident described in Yirmeyahu 36.
Exactly one generation after the discovery and reading of Deuter-onomy described in Kings, the king and the people
have been backsliding. G d commands Yirmeyahu to
"TAKE A SCROLL
AND WRITE ON IT ALL OF THE WORDS
THAT I HAVE SPOKEN TO YOU ABOUT ISRAEL AND JEHUDAH
AND ALL OF THE NATIONS, SINCE THE DAY WHEN I SPOKE FIRST TO YOU
IN THE DAYS OF JOSIAH & UNTIL NOW .... PERHAPS THE HOUSE OF JEHUDAH WILL HEAR OF ALL THE EVIL
WHICH I INTEND TO DO UNTO THEM, AND WILL REPENT EACH ONE FROM HIS EVIL WAYS,
AND I WILL FORGIVE THEIR SIN & THEIR TRANSGRESSION?!"
Jeremiah 36:1-2 e.v.
is toch
heel andere koek
dan tegenwoordig waar iedereen
bijna overal van alles kan zeggen over
wat dan ook
zonder enig
gevolg
...?!
