Circumcision
twarts HIV
infection?



A
study
in South Africa
has shown for the first time
that circumcising adult men
can dramatically lower their risk
of becoming infected by HIV
through heterosexual
sex.


It is
a major advance
in HIV-prevention
studies!


For
nearly 20 years,
observational studies
have suggested that circumcusion
protects men from HIV infection,
but until now,
there was no prospective evidence
to support that
conclusion?


Circumcision
could profoundly curtail
the spread of HIV in sub-Saharan
Africa ...


Circumcision practices
vary greatly from country to country,
and studies have shown that the regions
with the wordt AIDS epidemics
have the lowest circumcision
rates!


But
we caution
against rushing to integrate circumcision
into public health policies ...


Not only
are the results from one location
difficult to generalize,
but this study also does not address
whether circumcision reduces the ability of HIV-infected men
to transmit
the virus?


THAT
question
is being explored
right now!


Adult circumcision
carries serious risks,
especially when performed by traditional healers
who do not have proper
training.


AND
because circumcision
does NOT provide complete protection,
it could backfire if it encouraged men
to have more unprotected sex -
which would also greatly raise risks
for women?


WE DO NEED
to make sure that we're not hurting more than
we're helping!


Even so,
circumcision COULD be an important part
of e comprehensive prevention
strategy ...


OBVIOUSLY,
there IS no magic bullet!
Prevention really is a combination approach
where we need to put together
ALL things that we know
can make a
difference.


Public
health service
requires that when research it supports
involves testing people for HIV,
the participants MUST be informed
of their results ...


Other funders
do NOT have this
requirement?


The
above mentioned study
provided counseling and also advised everyone
to learn their status and receive more intensive counseling,
BUT on a VOLUNTARY
basis!


The
researchers
made THESE conditions voluntary
BECAUSE of concerns about the intense stigma
that HIV-infected people
often face ...


MANY
of these people
prefer to be dead
than rejected by their
community?


Which only
DOES show the importance of
'circumcising your heart':
IF you 'are human'
and want to become 'more human',
THAN, I would say 'knowing yourself'
CAN'T be missed!


THE
