THE
LIVELY ARTS:
AS ELVIS PRESLEY
CHARGES TO THE EDGE
OF THE STAGE TO HOWL "YOU AIN'T NOTHIN'
BUT A HOUND DOG" SCREAMING MIAMI GIRLS CHARGE THE STAGE
AND CLUTCH FOR
HIS CLOTHES
"ELVIS"
A DISTURBING
KIND OF IDOL!
PRESLEY'S IMPACT
PILES UP FANS, FADS ~ AND FEARS
AS SAVIOUR OF THE LOWEST PARTS OF MANKIND.
UP TO A POINT, THE U.S.A. CAN WITHSTAND THE IMPACT
OF ELVIS PRESLEY AS A FAMILIAR AND ACCEPTABLE PHENOMENON.
whenever the lean, 21-year-old singer from Memphis Tennessee goes to howl out
his combination of hillbilly and "rock-'n-roll", he is beset by teenage girls yelling
for him. They dote on his sideburns & pegged pants, covet strands of his hair,
boycott radio station "disk jockeys" who dislike his records [which have sold
some six million copies]! All this 'the stolen slave country'
has seen before - what with Johnnie Ray, Frank Sinatra
& all the way back to the first "crooner," Rudy Vallee
{a.s.o.}? But with Elvis Presley, the daffiness
has been deeply disturbing to civic leaders,
clergymen & some parents! He does not
just bounce to accent his heavy beat:
he uses a "bump and grind" routine
usually seen only in the low world
of the burlesque theater. His
young teenage audiences,
unexposed to such
goings-on, do not
just shout their
approval, they
get set off by
shock waves
of hysteria,
going into
frenzies
of screeching
and wailing, winding
up in tears. In Miami, Florida
one newspaper columnist called
Presley's performance "obscene."
In Jacksonville he was threatened with jail!
His impact has brought Elvis Presley a welcome
taste of wealth and fame. But it
has also brought him
some unwelcome
attention
...
Happy
screechers at
Jacksonville held their
heads and yelled as loud
as they could as
Presley yowled
...
While
valiant comedian
and vocal quartet
preceeding him were on stage,
girls talked loudly
about Elvis
...
Police
and volunteer
aides in Miami strained
to hold off fans
forcing way to
the stage
