BOTH CONSIDERATION & CONVENTION
prescribe that the listener show attentiveness to the speaker
through listening behaviors that effectively constitute a nonverbal and/or partially verbal form
of simultaneous speaking.

By acknowledging the spoken message in this way,
the listener provides the speaker a degree of confidence in the mutual comprehension and overall success of the communication, helping to establish a mutually coherent experiential
context for the con-versation.

But mechanically mediated conversation, whether a conventional letter or tape, Internet Chat a.s.o. (etceterara!), shifts the message through time & space, generally restricting or eliminating parallel listening behavior, and leaving both speaker & listener essentially free to invent a pair of possibly distinct contexts, recalling the warmth of a face-to-face conversation or the indifference of reviewing a laundry list.

So while a love letter is best written
and read as though the partner were immediately present,
a mortgage foreclosure may be written without any consideration
of a human recipient and read in a tone
not likely addressed directly
to the banker.

write 'out loud'
what I read, feel,
see, fold, manipulate, change, criticize,
sample, share, receive, give, sing & 'hold'; very much like gardening, playing,
cooking, cleaning, preserving, discarding,
'creating' & growing, harvesting
& 'share with humanity'!?
