by a notion that passed through my head very early this morning.
I was walking into SHUL, and the GABBAI asked me if I would take the Torah out at the proper time (we're currently DAVENING in a room other than where the Torah scrolls are kept). I said, "Sure, as long as I'm not DAVENING;" and when he didn't quite catch my drift, clarified "as long as I'm not sent up to the amud," that is, told to lead the service as a mourner (which I was, in the end).<
{Mordechai, not being Jewish was totally flabbergasted when asked to read from the Torah on the amud in 1991 @ Bnei Brac so of course I had to refuse barely being able to read Hebrew but it still was a very nice gesture: anyways, most dear 'myDiertjes' won't understand those "strange words & practices" also, being neither Jewish, Muslim or Christian, so JB lifts the veils by trying to explain "what's what" in this case:
"Shul," dear friend, is simply an old-fashioned word for synagogue, and this is indeed an old-fashioned synagogue. "Gabbai" -how do they translate it- here means the fellow who assigns roles to various participants in the course of the prayer service. "Davening" is a Yiddish word that means "praying," & it's interesting because not even the best Yiddish cultural historians know where it comes from. Here, I've used it twice (writes JB), once to refer to what all the members of the congregation are doing together, and once to refer to actual leadership of the service. Being sent up to the "amud," or lectern, is a less ambiguous term for being in-structed to lead that particular service.
Again, in a nutshell, the main myDiproblem: we use many different languages, cultural traditions, all kinds of funny local trends & fashions, ages, sexes, mental habits & shit to be able to express ourselves (to ourselves and each other)?! Dit is dus allemaal 'uit het leven gegrepen', maar het tekent de totale gespletenheid van diverse bevolkingsgroepen die toch 'moeten samenleven'!?
Hoe communiceren heidenen, roomskatholieke papen, hervormde & reformatorische protestanten, diverse soorten 'joden', 'moslims', sekta-risch gedetermineerden, niksisten, religiehaters, anarchisten, barbaren, criminelen, drugaddicts, economisten, financialisten & geldwisselaars met elkaar als we geen gemeenschappelijk taalgebruik 'in common' hebben? NÍET DUS! Ruimer gezien: DÌT is HÈT probleem v/d mensheid ~
