hoe Yeshu de meest bekende
mens ter wereld is geworden. Blijkbaar zien mensen
in zijn blijde boodschap heel veel
verschillende wenselijke kanten
voor hun korte bestaan
hier op aarde?!
Another
profound saying
seems directed chiefly
against the Romans. According to Lucky Luke's wording in
22:24-27, during the Last Supper Yeshua indicated that he would be handed over. His apostles began dis-cussing among themselves who would be Yehoshua's successor, or,
in Luke's words,
"Then arose a dispute among them, which of them was to be regarded as the gretest. And he said to them,
'THE KINGS OF THE GENTILES EXERCISE LORDSHIP OVER THEN. BUT NOT SO WITH YOU! RATHER LET THE GREATEST AMONG YOU BECOME AS THE YOUNGEST, & THE LEADER AS ONE WHO SERVES. FOR WHICH IS THE GREATER, ONE WHO SITS AT THE TABLE, OR ONE WHO SERVES? IS IT NOT THE ONE WHO SITS AT THE TABLE? BUT I AM AMONG YOU AS ONE WHO SERVES!'"
For a full understanding of these words of Yehoshua, some knowledge of Hebrew is necessary.
The apostles were arguing over who would be their future leader (Hebrew:
RAV,
great one). Yeshua opposed any kind of lordship over men,
as was the custom of Gentile
(
goy)
kings:
"BUT NOT SO WITH YOU!"
In order to express his opposition to any kind of nationalistic imperialism, Yeshu alluded to Genesis 25:23:
"The great one
(RAV,
here in the meaning of 'the elder'
shall serve the younger!"
This was said in connection with ESAW
('the elder'
who would serve Ya'akov
('the younger'

,
and was seen as a prophecy
of the waning power of the elder Esaw
under the ascendancy of the younger Ya'acov.
In JC's time Esaw was taken as symbolizing Rome.
Yeshu, in an anti-imperialistic mood, purposely de-politicized the contemporary understanding
of the biblical verse. He wanted to say, thereby, that the Roman rulers of the nations have in their hands power; but for us the biblical words mean that the greater,
the leader, shall serve
the lesser.
Remember
the story of the elder Kayin who killed the younger Hevel?

that those who are sitting at the table are more important than the waiter. Nevertheless, Yehoshua, the master, now performs on the eve of the Passover the task of a waiter & serves the apost-
les at the table [Mark {10:41-45; so also Matai 20:24-28} has placed the scene in an earlier connection and replaced the end of the story {Luke 18:27} by another, 'christological'/messianic conclusion {Mark 10:
45; Matai 20:28}!]! Yeshu acted with uncommon humility, even if a similar act is reported also about the grandson of Gamaliel mentioned in Acts (this story, however, is
not connected with the
Passover)
