"SISTERS"

And
the times
they are a-changin':
hashhead Nietzsche
was right when he wrote,
"The attempts I know of
to construct the history of a 'soul'
from the Gospels seem to me to imply a deplorable psychological frivolity!"

There is,
however, a psychological
element in the life of Yeshua that we may not ignore:
the tension between Yeshua's familial ties
and his understanding of his
divinely appointed task.

This element
is to be found even
in the historically less reliable Yochanan.
At the marriage feast in Cana, Yehoshua's mother asked him to produce wine,
and he replied,
"O woman,
what have you to do with me?"
{Yoch 2:4}.
This expression,
which appears frequently in the Gospels,
comes from I Kings 17:18
WAYOMER ELEIHA YESHUA MAH-LI WALACH ISHAH ITI ADAYIN LO-VA'AH:
WATOMER EL-ELIYAHU MAH-LI WALACH ISH HA-ELOHIM BATA ELAI
LEHAZKIR ET-AWONI ULHAMIT ET-BENI?:

In a recently discovered apocryphal narrative,
this theme of tension between Yehoshua and his family
is heightened almost intolerably: the source reports that, as Yehoshua was being crucified,
his mother Miryam and her sons Ya'akov, Shim'on, & Yehudah, came and stood before him.
Hanging upon the cross, he said to her,
"TAKE YOUR SONS
AND GO
AWAY!"

The
heightening of
this familial tension
is also present in the Synoptic Gospels.

According to Lucky Luke 8:21,
Yehoshua recognized the religious piety of his family:
"My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of G d and do it!"

WAYA'AN WAYOMER ALEIHEM IMI WEACHAI HEM HASHOM'IM WEO'SIM ET DEVAR HA'ELOHIM!:

Yet, he elevated the importance of those who believe. On another occasion we hear that
"a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him,
'BLESSED IS THE WOMB THAT BORE YOU, AND THE BREASTS THAT YOU SUCKED!'

But he said,
'BLESSED RATHER ARE THOSE WHO HEAR
THE WORD OF G D AND KEEP IT!'

{LUKE 11:27-28}
Even so, Mark's version of Luke 8:21 exaggerates Jesus' own familial tension
and reads as a rejection by Yehoshua of his family:
"Who are my mother
and my brothers?"

And looking around at those who sat about him, he said,
'HERE ARE MY MOTHER AND MY BROTHERS!

WHOEVER

DOES THE WILL OF G D
IS MY BROTHER, AND SISTER,
AND MOTHER!'

{Mark 3:34-35 &
Matai 12:46-50}
