at the University of Minnesota,
one of the junior members of the anthropology department,
a physical anthropologist, told me how much it meant to him
that I had acknowledged the real contingency of human culture.
As he told me, one of the things he tries to impress upon his students is that our inheritance of language is not a given.

catch myself in the course
of writing these notes thinking.

we call 'dreamland',
Heaven/Hell or
Limbo/or so
...

Mor:
by chance,
coincidence, fate, emergency,
imagination and so on and on and on,
we might have struck here the basic root of our "being here"?!
Here we have, as in Jonathan & Martin, or for that matter any other person or persons,
the fact that we say, write, print, symbolize in our mind,
vision, hearing this bundle of words, meaning,
sentences & 'entries'!?

WHY
are we talking,
writing, printing, formalizing these words
on these pages: feeling a need, an urge, to express
what we feel, think, discover & want to express about ourselves
to ourselves and to each other!! Still, understanding, communicating depends
on sharing words, meaning, opinions,
chances & coincidences?

Obviously,
this sharing of signs
also includes dividing ourselves into groups of ages,
languages, experiences, happenings & their opposites! It all began,
to say almost the least, with our fathers & mothers (and their families/differences & experiences, fysically/mentally/socially/technically/fantastically a.s.o.),
each and everyone of us was growing up (and/or
down) by these different/same 'happenings',
hallucinations/appearances/acts
of will!?

So after experiencing
those 10/20/30 etcetera years
we now & here 'read each others words'
& guess we dig (or don't grab)
the meaning 'of
it all'?!!!!!

The point is:
do we really do so,
and 'in how far', 'how deep'/'superficially?
Why do we write/read/understand/guess 'their meaning'
& if so & while 'doing' so, what is the actual purpose, sense,
connection between 'what one writes/says/means' &
what others (and us)
guess it's all
about (or
isn't)?!

The baby
grows up 'hearing
sounds', 'swimming/floating'
in the motherly ocean, with or without
a father figure, inside those different ('same' mothers,
circumstances, experiencing love, hate, tenderness, violence, (mis)understanding, actions & 'silence' -
a process picked up & followed after more or less nine months by all those following years with at least one language ~ so, anyways,
that's where we do 'meet each other' on our way(s) in between 'beginning & ending' (sooner or later) ~ on the way, on the (cross)roads, different paths where language, experience, action, differences & sameness mix, intermingle,
affect each other by effects quite riddle some, mysterious, fateful
and meaningful (or not) ~ and that's where we
continue/disconnect, guess/give up,
react/separate!?

What
connects is
like water, electricity, flow
& 'message', SPIRIT: we 'drink each
other' (& ourselves), we touch,
see, hear, notice, expect,
hope, suppose, guess,
communicate (or
don't)!
