happened thirty years ago seems like yesterday ...
Saw Moscow again on tv.
Just remembered we walked all around the Kremlin and along the Newa shore in April/May {?} '70 on our way back from Birobeidjan to Odessa.
Funny how old memories can come back again just like that:
a picture is enough to trigger the memory!
Hotel Metropole.
Red Square.
We didn't even take the Metro:
only walked around quite a lot.
Went to see the synagogue and met only old people in black clothes,
showed them a map of Israel after the Six Day War in june '67,
but they looked as if they couldn't trust me.
And again in Odessa some old deserted prayer house on the outskirts of town.
At first we were not allowed to enter the restaurant,
went back to the hotel and got angry with the Intourist guide who led us past the fat short bully at the entrance:
very oldfashioned place,
fat men with neckties and blond girls with too much lipstick!
Before that the small railwaystation in Birobeidjan with newspapers in Yiddish.
Transsiberian Railway from Nachodka to the capital!
Snow everywhere and ice,
made you think of doctor Zhivago?
In the sixties there were also still Brigate Rosse in Italia,
colonels in Greece & Turkey,
a king in Afghanistan & Bhutto {?}
in Pakistan
...
The Shahinshah of Persia with Farah Dibah?
Memories get mixed up after so many years:
but the feeling of walking in ice cold & bloody hot weather is still there as fresh as can be together with faces & bodies,
houses and food,
talking & songs we sang!
Seems like yesterday
while it all happened
more than thirty years ago.
