Early rabbinic texts repeatedly refer to Jesus as a magician. Indeed the very distinction between magic and mi-racles was a function of the evaluation and location of the practitioner, and not a phenomenology of the practice. The rhetoric & plot of our narrative suggest that Rabbi Eli'ezer was accused of being exceptional and threatening when he used language in a certain way to effect "reality" and was deemed to have been
cut down to size when he used language in a way that indicated that he, too, believed that "it [the Torah]
is not in heaven." Some seem to allow a certain measure of "essentialism" in the definition of the sorce-rer: the superstitious man was like the sorcerer. He replicated in his relation to the supernatural patterns of dominance and dependence that were best left unexpressed. This sounds like a fair enough represen-tation of the character of Rabbi Eli'ezer in these stories. Note, of course, the tight association of super-stitio
and sorcery, both threats to a kind of civic order. The precise issue between Rabbi Eli'ezer and his collegues is "the difference between legitimate and illigitimate forms of supernatural power." Hence, perhaps, his insinuated association with Christians. Christians who did boast a la Eusebius of "foreknow-ledge of the future, visions, and prophetic utterances laying on of hands," healing the sick, & even raising
the dead. Er is dus absoluut niets mis met Yehosjoea & Sjapo: zij vertegenwoordigen de omstandigheden
en visies van hun eigen tijd rond 30 & 50 nC! Het probleem is alleen het feit dat mensen nog lang niet in staat waren om hun inzichten op de juiste waarde te schatten: men gaf de voorkeur aan wonderen en tovenarij, bovennatuurlijk ingrijpen. toeval, G ds wil & de ingrepen van engelen, duivels, satan & heilige geest. Dit laatste kwam 't dichtst in de buurt bij eigen verantwoordelijkheid, begrip & daadkrachtige liefde.
