Heel
ons mydileven
hangt dus af
van symbolisme. Alles
wat we doen, voelen, denken,
gebaren, zeggen, schrijven & laten
berust op tekens, symbolen,
kleuren, beweging, geluid
& onderlinge
afspraken.
Opvoeding,
training, werkervaring:
we komen telkens weer
dezelfde symbolen tegen van licht & beweging,
gesproken & geschreven taal: interchange of meaning ~
transfer of significant concepts, ideas, discvovery through
new experiments, voorlopige conclusies &
tijdelijke veronderstellingen ~
zolang 't maar
werkt
...
If we accept
only the narrower etymological definition of language
as that which is produced by our human vocal organs and received by the hearing apparatus,
we shall have to deny the name of "language" to these {'primitive'} transfers,
but if we accept broader definitions of language as
ANY
transfer of human meaning,
they are forms of language only differing in degree
but not in kind from our spoken or wrtitten
languages. In their anxiety to restrict language
to a certain pattern of sounds,
too many linguists seem to have forgotten
that these sound symbols of the spoken tongue
are neither more nor less symbolical of human thought
and human meaning than the various forms of activity
{gestural, pictorial, ideographic and artistic!} by which
men have conveyed significant
messages to one another
since the dawn
of history
...
It seems a commonplace
among linguists that the spoken language
antedates the written language by at
least thousands, perhaps millions {?},
of years? Insofar as the written language
is a symbolical replica of the spoken tongua,
this is undoubtedly true!
But there is little
or no assurance that organized sound language,
as distinguished from mere animal cries,
antedates pictographs painted on the walls of caves
or socalled petroglyphs carved on rocks,
whose purpose undoubtedly was
to convey a significant message
or establish a more
permanent
record.
It
seemed magical,
and maybe it still is:
we just got so used to it
that [usually?] we have already
lost our ability to wonder
& wander freely through our 'ravages'
& new built constructions
in time &
space?
