Their isolated residence
in the desert of Judea allowed the Qumran community
to strictly adhere to G d's commandment, that a chasm be maintained between
the two parties that make up humanity. The desert community set itself apart from "
the dwelling of the men of sin"
,
and distanced itself from all the sinful society of their day
('almost like also Yehosjoea haNotsri aka haMasjiach in his freeway to para-dise in heaven did during one or two years running around between the south of Levanon & north of Qumran on the shores of the Dead Salt Sea'
.
At the same time,
the desert affords an effective means for the ascetic withdrawal of the community
from all worldly pleasures, from 'the noise of the nations and the uproar of kingdoms' [& all kinds of shit like that]?! It is clear that the move to the desert has a concrete social function as well.
After all, many popular movements in antiquity had their genesis
in departure for a desert: this move was motivated by difficult social conditions,
and often by pressures and persecutions that caused the group to seek safe haven in the desert!
It appears that persecution played a role in the Qumran community's move to a desert:
these persecutions did not cease even after the community had exiled itself, as
"the Wicked Priest pursued this Teacher of Righteousness to consume him with the heat of his anger in the place of his banishment"!
Proof of this is also found in the "War Scroll"
{which in our reckoning was composed early on in the existence of the sect},
which refers to those members of the community as "the exiled of the desert", that is,
as having been forced to go into exile in the desert. According to the War Scroll,
members of the community will do battle against forces of the enemy "when the exiled sons of light return from the desert of the nations to camp in the desert of Yerushalayim"!
HERE,
then, the departure for the desert
is seen as a means of concentrating forces needed for the {r}evolutionary military operation?
In those days, anyone seeking a total revolution adopted an apocalyptic doctrine. After all, these doctrines hold that the corrupt order cannot be overturned until the current world passes away
and a new world order arises, one [better] suited to divine justice
[the laws of nature!]!
Man cannot precipitate this revolution unaided;
righteousness will take the place of corruption only with "divine assistance"?!
The apocatyptic thinker sees himself as living in the final generation, and thus maintains the hope
of seeing the dawn of a new,
just world.
