WE
HAVE BEEN
silent
WITNESSES
of evil deeds ...
We have been
drenched by many storms .......
We have learnt the arts of equivocation and pretence:
experience has made us suspicious of others and
kept us from being truthful
and open ...
INTOLERABLE conflicts have worn us down
and even made us
cynical ....
ARE WE
still of any use
at all?
WHAT we shall need
is not geniusses or cynics or misanthropes or
clever technicians
but plain honest straightforward
men and women.
WILL our inward power
of resistance be strong enough and our honesty
with ourselves
remorseless enough for us
to find our way
to simplicity and straightforwardness?
~!~
You hate to watch another tired man
lay down his burden .......
SO
give me songs
to keep your mind from
critical thought?
Songs to arouse {r}evolutionary
feelings:
worlds of illusion and
make believe
cultures of waste and
idiocy
changing without
end
which side are you on
my friend!?!
What do you choose
comrade in arms?
Where do you do to my darling
when you're alone in
my bed?
ARE YOU pretending
to be 'progressive'
because it is fashionable now or
are you really trying to do something about
IT?
ARE YOU following that brilliant combination
of technology
and private enterprise?
WHAT ARE YOU
and what do you want to be?
A hypocrat or a shortsighted fool,
liberal maybe
a human being or
an animal socialist maybe
a conformist or an individualist
communist/anarchist?
SURELY all of us
are supposed to show our up-to-date attitudes
by acquiring as rapidly
as possible all over automatic vibrationfree and
whisperquiet dynamically
balanced advertisement idols for the veneration of
big brothers and sisters and
their great automatic machine-society producing
endless nervous diseases and the
pollution of our inner and outer
environments?
~ IS IT TRUE
that all the men you knew
were dealers who said they were thru with dealing
every time you gave them shelter?
I know that kind of man ...
it's hard to hold the hand of anyone
who is reaching for the sky
just to surrender
and then sweeping up the jokers that he left behind
you find
he did not leave you very much
not even laughter
like any dealer
he was watching for the card
that is so high and wild
he'll never need to deal another
he was just some Joseph
looking for a manger ...
And then
leaning on your windowsill
he'll say one day
you caused his will to weaken with your love
and warmth
and shelter
and then taking from his wallet
an old schedule of trains
he'll say
I told you when I came I was
a stranger .........
~!~
BUT NOW
another stranger
seems to want you
to ignore his dreams as though
they were the burden of
some other ...
You've seen that man before
his golden arm dispatching cards
but now
it's rusted from the elbow to the finger
and he want to trade the game he plays
for shelter ........
Yes
he wants to trade the game he knows ...
for shelter ...

{Leonard Cohen,
Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchel, Ritchie Havens, Classical Music,
Judy Collins, Buffy Sainte Mary and Joan Baez,
Pete Seeger, Donovan, Cat Stevens,
Bob Dylon, The Eagles and so
on:
I used to
buy their records
when they were still new
and then give them to Gaya, Nurit or Helen ...}
And tried to remember their melodies
and songs and
'ideas' ...
~!~
I WANT YOU
to come with me
let me go with you
winter lady
travelling lady stay a while until the night is over ...
I'm just a station on your way
I know I'm not your lover
well
I lived
with a child of snow
when I was a soldier and I
fought every man
for her
until the nights grew
colder ...
~!~
she used to
wear her hair like you
except when she was sleeping
and then I'd weave it on a loom of smoke and
gold and breathing
and why are you
so quiet now
standing there
in the
doorway?
~!~
You choose
your journey long before
you came
upon
this highway ...
~!~
STOP IT
you crazy old hitch hiking hippy beatle beatnik good for nothing sleazy
easy lazy days of summer ...
roads without end
we thought
endless
highways towards
nowhere particular except into ourselves and
each other
digging the world as it was and
we thought it was
going to
be!
