and desire, the roads crissing & crossing through which identities, entities, ultimately Christianity & Judaism, were forged in the late antiquity might help, a bit, in the greatest, most acutely emergent task with which Jews (in the end it comes to this for me) are faced right now, once again to maintain our existence, our cultural, religious memory without sacrificing the very meanings of that existence, continuity, & memory on their own altar, without fetishizing borders & boundaries in the enactment of an ethnic cleansing that finally, in my view, negates the very meaning of Jewish survival until now.


If we have been
for only ourselves, what are we?
As I write, in occupied Palestine literal physical boundaries
of barbed wire & electrified fencing are being raised to separate violently one "people" form another.
In this process of maintaining our own identities (& now I do address Christians - ànd, indeed, Muslims -
as well!), càn we learn the lessons of the past & prevent ourselves at the eleventh hour from the path of new & even more violent heresiologies? Jews & Christians are called upon at this moment to learn from our own diffi-cult histories,
without in any way rendering those histories equivalent
phenomenologically or morally,
& do something
different now
....

The Prophet teaches:
