it's
quite clear
that Mark KNEW
very well what he was talking about
when he discussed the pharisaic ritual practices & purity rules!
The clearest demonstration of this involves a word in the Greek that is usually obscured in English translations of Mark 7:3 ~
FOR THE PHARISEES & ALL OF THE JUDAEANS DO NOT EAT UNLESS THEY WASH THE HANDS
with a fist,
ACCORDING TO THE TRADITION OF THE ELDERS!"
These words usually translated "and all the Jews" make no sense according to that usual translation, as they almost directly contradict point of the whole pericope. Why attack the Pharisees alone if their practice is simply the practice of all the Jews? For "JUDAEANS" as one possible legitimate translation of IOUDAIOI, if not the only one always & everywhere ~ "Jews, JUDAEANS, Judaizing, Judaism" in Problems of Catego-rization in Ancient History; it should thus be noted also that the translation "Judaeans" rather than "Jews" obviates comments that suggest that Mark by writing this is indicating a position outside of Jewry?!
It might have started with Chaldeans, Hebrews, Israelites, Yehudim, Galileans, Kana'anites, Palestinians, Arabs, Barbarians, Cretans, Egypti-ans, Babylonians, Assyrians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Macedonians, Asians, Africans, Europeans & all those other near & far away places as expats, prisoners, slaves, deported, arrested, imported, fled, tortured, killed, billed, milled & filled: but what 'does it all mean' NOW/HERE ...?
Enough for now: it boggles the mind & hurts my behind. Eerst nog even medicijnen, eten, drinken & 'n dutje doen vóór 'verder te gaan'
