I can look again,
but I think a non-contextual reading is entirely called for here.
I realize now that I had always read the "I was" as the default situation;
it would almost have to be read as "when you were silent, I was" or,
more pointedly, perhaps "when you are silent, I was"
(a curious form of relation between two subjects I,
or at, two times or at least
two tenses).

Or,
and also,
"I was" means
"I was only potential"
and when " you speak"
"I am actual."

This could easily mean
"I am actual" because you
invoke me, you speak of me,
you speak of the things that moved me
and of which I spoke; or it could also mean,
conversely (but I think not inconsistently with what Benveniste writes,
and quite likely you are suggesting this as well
if not in so many terms): when
you address me
I become
actual!

This
would not
require a dead ego;
but I wonder whether it could in
any case INCLUDE
a dead
ego
...
