52braZ in the year 56 nC/CE, the sicarii under ~~~
Menahem's leadership were finally able to achieve what "J(eh)uda(s) the Galilean" could only dream of accomplishing!
During the feast of Pesach/Passover, a sicarii assassin pushed his way through the mass of pilgrims packed into the Temple Mount until he was thus also rather close enough to the high priest Yonathan to pull out his dagger & swipe it across his throat? He then melted back into the crowd!
This murder of the high priest threw all of Jerusalem into a panic: how on earth (or 'the hell'
could the Leader of the Jewish Nation aka G d's representative on earth, be killed in broad daylight, in the middle of the Temple Courtyard, ànd seemingly with total impunity ...?!
Many refused to believe that the culprit cóuld have béén a Jew!? There were also whispers that the Roman governor, Felix, had ordered this assassination himsèlf?! Who else could have been só profane as to spill the high priest's blood òn these Temple grounds? Yet those sicarii had only jùst begùn their reign of intensified terror? Shouting their slogan "NO LORD BUT GOD!" they began attacking the mem-bers of the Jewish Ruling Class, plundering their possessions, kidnapping the relatives, taking hostages and burning down their homes!!
By these tactics they sowed general terror into the hearts and minds of the Jews so that, as Flavius Yosephus wrote,
"MORE TERRIBLE THAN THEIR CRIMES WAS THE FEAR THEY AROUSED, EVERY MAN HOURLY EXPECTING DEATH, AS IN WÀR?!"
With Yonathan's death, the messianic ardor in Jerusalem reached fever pitch: there was a widespread sense among the Jews that something very profound was happening, a feeling born of desperation, nurtured by a people yearning & burning for freedom from foreign rule! Zeal, the spirit that so had fueled that revolutionary fervor of these bandits, prophets, & messiahs, was now coursing through those populations like a virulent virus working its way through this whole body; no longer could it anymore be contained as before in the countryside: its influence was being felt in all towns & cities, even Jerusalem! And it was not just the peasants & outcasts who were whispering about the great kings & prophets who had freed Israel from almost all of her enemies in the past: the wealthy & upwardly mobile were also becoming increa-singly animated by the fervent desire to urgently cleanse this whole "HOLY LAND" of the Greek/Roman heathen occupation; the signs & miracles were now almost everywhere all the time: the scriptures were being fulfilled and the end of days was at hand now day by day?
