THE SINS OF THE PRIESTHOOD, AND THE SINS OF THE WHOLE NATION!
Modern significance? This 1 day festival {orthodox and liberal alike} is devoted entirely
to prayer and fasting, services are held in the synagogue virtually throughout the day, and the top
main theme is still ¨REPENTANCE OF SIN¨ COUPLED WITH THE DESIRE TO REMEDY
OUR CRUEL STRAYING FROM ´G D´ BY A GENUINE ATTEMPT AT REFORMED
CONDUCT WHICH WILL HELP TO MAKE US MORE ¨AT-TONE¨ WITH HIM
[HER/IT]! The day of atonement has no automatic cleansing effect, but one
should heed the rabbinic injunction, ¨IF THOU HAST SINNED AGAINST
THY NEIGH-BOUR, FIRST GO AND PUT THINGS RIGHT WITH
´HIM/HER/IT´, OTHERWISE THE DAY OF ATONE- MENT
DOES NOT ABSOLVE THEE¨!!! Nor does the act of
fasting have anything to do with forgiveness of sin!
We fast because: in the gesture of ¨sacrifice¨
we recognise that to do the right thing during the coming
year will often involve some sort of personal act of sacrifice,
so the jew begins this gesture of sacrificing that which is vital
to keep us alive ~ FOOD AND DRINK. Thus it serves as an inner
indication to us as to how strong [or weak] ìs our self-discipline, so that
we are either encouraged to carry out our other resolutions in the knowledge
that we possess the selfdiscipline to succeed, or we are warned that our selfdiscipline
is weak [if we break our fast] and therefore we need to carry out more spiritual exercises to
strenghthen it if we hope to put our resolutions into practice. BY CASTING ASIDE ALL MATERIAL CONSIDERATIONS DURING THIS DAY WE ARE ENABLED TO CONCENTRATE ENTIRELY UPON THE SPIRITUAL ASPECT OF LIFE. Ceremonial observance: candles are lit in the home at the commen-cement of this Festival but the is no kiddush. Naturally, we should abstain from unnecessary work, and one should attend Services in the Synagogue? Opmerkelijk hoe ´n volksstam in duizenden jaren
