I JUST WANT TO STAY HERE AND LOVE YOU! Two extremes: incarceration & liberation - traditional torture or tender love for all of us. The lawn did not remain solely a European or American craze! Even people who have never visited the Loire Valley see US presidents give speeches on the White House lawn, important football games played out in green stadiums, & Homer & Bart Simpson quarreling about whose turn it is to mow the grass. People all over the globe associate lawns with power, money & prestige. The lawn has there-fore spread far and wide, and is now set to conquer even the heart of the Muslim world? Qatar's newly built Museum of Islamic Art is flanked by magnificent lawns that hark back to Louis XIV's Versailles much more than the Haroun al-Rashid's Baghdad. They were de-signed and constructed by an American company, and their more than 100,000 square metres of grass - in the midst of the Arabian desert - require a stupendous amount of fresh water each day to stay green. Meanwhile, in the suburbs of Doha & Dubay, middle-class families pride themselves on their lawns. If it were not for the white robes & black hijabs, you could easily think you were in the Mid-west rather than the Middle East!? Having read this short story of the lawn, when you now come to plan your dream house you might think twice about having a lawn in the front yard? You are of course still free to do it. But you are also free to shake of the cultural cargo bequeathed to you by European dukes, capitalist moguls & the Simpsons - and imagine for yourself a Japanese rock garden, or some altogether new creation! This is the best reason to learn history: not in order to predict the future, but to free yourself of the past and imagine alternative destinies. Of course this is not total freedom - we cannot avoid being shaped by the past. But some freedom is better than none. In order to go 'back to the beginnings': imagine yourself in more than 1001 time- & space balloons full of local culture & creampies? Inbetween prisons & vacations, all kinds of conversations & the fear just to utter even one word! Threatened by hatred or coveted by love! Visiting noisy parties or staying home together for love and tenderness? As a conscript or a hippie, yuppie or freebie... Our languages seem to be fixed in between the extremes of threat & loving care, dark woods & open spaces, healthy respect & the evil Devils that can destroy it all? Homo sapiens & homo Deus: coming from so far away as all sources of fire & water, plants & insects, trees & pastures filled with green, brown, yellow, red, blue, purple, pink, black & white? Our life depends on what we hear, see, smell & taste: contradictions, comparisons, cooperations, coordinations; cells, bacteria, molecules, atoms, stickers & all kinds of amazing and fantastic considerations that keep us fascinated, dreaming, thinking, feeling, dealing, meaning, creating forever unexpected spacy dreamy godlike &/or horrible devilish conglomerations? It all depends who fends!!
