1001 messiassen, maitreya's, Mahdi's & 'magicians'
XXIV REZA ASLAN'S ZEALOT: Another messianic aspirant, simply called "the Samaritan," was crucified by Pontius Pilate even though he hadn't raised any 'army' & in no way challenged Rome ~ an indication that the authorities, sensing again an apocalyptic fever in the air, once more had become extremely sensitive to any hint of sedition.
There was for instance Hezekiah (Chazakyahu) the bandit chief, one Simon of Peraea, Judas the Galilean, hìs grandson Menahem, Simon son of Giora, & Simon son of Kochba ~ àll of whom declared mes-sianic ambitions ànd àll of whom were executed by Rome precisely for 'doing so'!?
Add to this long list of possible pretenders also the Essene sect, some of whose members lived in seclusion atop the dry plateau of Qumran on the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea; a first-century Jewish revolutionary party known as the Zealots, who helped launch a bloody war against Rome; and the fearsome bandit assassins whom the Romans dubbed the Sicarii {the Daggermen}, & the picture that thus emerges of first-century Palestine ìs quite of an era awash in messianic energy?!
It is difficult to place Yehoshua of Natseret aka haMashiach squarely within any of these more or less well known religiopolitical move-ments if this time!? He was a man of profound contradictions, one day preaching a message of racial exclusion ("I was sent solely to the lost sheep of Israel" in Matthew 15:24), the next, of benevolent universalism ("Go and make disciples of all nations" in Matthew 28: 19); sometimes calling for unconditional peace ("Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the sons of God" in Matai 5:9), sometimes promoting violence & conflict ("If you do not have a sword, go sell your cloak & buy one" in Lucky Luke 22:36)!
The problem with this 'pinning down' an "historical Yeshua" is that, outside of the "New Testament", there is almost no trace of the man who would so permanently alter the course of human history?
