THE CEREMONIAL
TRADITIONAL SHABBATHBLESSINGS: BAROOCH
ATA ADONAY ELOHAYNOO MELECH HA'OLAM ASHER
KIDESHANOO REMITSVOOTAV VETSIVANOO LEHADLIK NER SHEL SHABBAT:
Blessed art Thou, o lord our G d, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us
with his commandments, And commanded us to light the Shabbatcandles!
Or spontaneous prayer from the heart such as, "AS WE KINDLE
THESE LIGHTS TO WELCOME THE SHABBATHBLESSINGS WE PRAY
THAT THE LIGHT OF G D MAY ALSO ENTER OUR HOME AND OUR HEARTS
TO GUIDE US IN ALL OUR THOUGHTS AND OUR ACTIONS DURING THIS FORTHCOMING
WEEK!" The reason for lighting these candles on the evening of the SHABBATH with these blessings
and of all Festivals is 'TO CREATE A SACRED ATMOSPHERE IN OUR HOME' ~ as a sort of 'visual aid'!
{2} Hence the family should go to the Synagogue in order to Welcome the Shabbathday also into their
congregational Home & Join with other Families as Part of One Large Congregational Family?!!!
{3} On their return home the family assembles around the dining table for the shabbathmeal! Often the father
blesses his children, & then before starting this meal the sanctification or KUDDUSH is recited (again, not necessarily
THE "monopoly" of THE man of THE house)! This usually takes the form of a prayer recited over a glass of kosher wine
(symbol of the "JOY" of this day)! Here too a spontaneous family prayer is advisable along such lines as,
"BEFORE WE DRINK THE WINE REMINDING US OF THE JOY OF THE SHABBATHDAY LET US ALSO WELCOME
THE PEACE AND THE REST OF THIS SHABBATHDAY INTO OUR HOME AND HEARTS BY ENDING ALL THE QUARRELS
AND THE ANIMOSITIES OF THIS PAST WEEK, AND BY RESOLVING TO BRING THE SPIRIT IF LOVE, UNDERSTANDING
& TENDERNESS INTO OUR FAMILYCIRCLE & INTO ALL OF OUR DAILY DEALINGS WITH ALL OF GOD'S CHILDREN!
Let us, then, turn to G d in humility & in gratitude as we recite together this
blessing over the wine!" BAROOCH ATA ADONAY ELOHAYNOO MELECH HA'OLAM BORAY PRIY HAGEFEN
{blessed art Thou, o
lord, our G d, king of the universe, who creates the fruit of the winevine!}
Which might also be followed by the blessing
over the bread, BAROOCH ATA ADONAY ELOKAYNOO MELECH HA'OLAM HAMPTSIY LECHEM MIN HA'ARETZ, BLESSED
ART THOU, O LORD, OUR G D, KING OF THE UNIVERSE, who brings forth bread from the earth!
(4) The Grace should
then follow the meal, & that might be followed by various table-songs relating to the Spirit of the SHABBATH, or by
readings from the bible or from other parts of Jewish literature!
(5) This procedure might be repeated
after these families return from the saturdaymorningservice & prior to the saturdaylunch!
(6) An appropriate 'ushering-out' ceremony, HAVDALAH, might also
be introduced on Saturdayevening @
the termination of
the SHABBATH!
